The situation it addresses is common in offices and workshops that upgrade in stages. A monitor bought with a DVI input is paired with a PC, projector, KVM switch or industrial panel whose only output is VGA — or the reverse. The usual improvisation is a passive VGA-to-DVI adapter block screwed onto the end of an ordinary VGA cable.
