When you're sourcing Lightning or USB-C cables for Apple devices, one of the first questions you'll ask a supplier is: "Are you MFi certified?" The answer you get might be "Yes, we are MFi certified." But that answer is misleading — and here's why.
What "MFi Certified" Actually Means
Apple's MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) program has two different things that suppliers tend to blur into one phrase. First, a Manufacturing License: a contract manufacturer or ODM can be licensed to build or sub-assemble MFi accessories on behalf of licensees. Apple keeps a list of these authorized manufacturers, but it is confidential — you can only see it after signing an NDA with Apple, so as a buyer you cannot verify "we are an MFi factory" from the outside. Second, and this is what actually protects you, product certification: each accessory model is self-certified and reported to Apple individually, gets its own PPID (Product Plan ID), and only then can appear in Apple's public accessory search. A supplier can hold a manufacturing license and still sell you a cable that was never certified. The certification is tied to a specific product design, connector assembly (C89, C94, etc.) and PPID — not to the building it was made in.

What You Should Ask for — Not Just "Are You MFi?"
When a supplier says "we are MFi," here's what you need to verify:
1. The PPID (Product Plan ID)
Every MFi-licensed product has a unique PPID assigned by Apple. Ask for the PPID of the exact cable model you're sourcing. Then check the product in Apple's public MFi accessory search at https://mfi.apple.com/account/accessory-search — it searches by Brand, Model or UPC/EAN (not by PPID), and a product only appears there after the licensee has completed self-certification and reported it to Apple. So a genuine, newly launched cable can be missing for a while; a cable that has been on sale for months and is still not there is a red flag. If the supplier can't provide a PPID, the product is not MFi licensed.
2. Connector Assembly Source
MFi requires the use of Apple-certified connector assemblies (C89 for Lightning, C94 for USB-C to Lightning). Ask for proof of purchase from an authorized Apple connector supplier. Without this, the cable cannot be MFi compliant — even if the supplier has other MFi products.
3. Physical Sample Testing
The only way to be sure is to test a sample with a real Apple device. Connect it, sync data, charge, and check for "This accessory is not supported" warnings. A genuine MFi cable will work without issues. A counterfeit may work initially but fail after an iOS update.
