How do I tell whether a complaint is the cable or the device?

Swap-one-variable tests, in a fixed order, before any conclusion.

Answer: change one variable at a time and record the result — the goal is to make the fault follow the cable, or not.

  1. Same cable, different device — fault follows the cable?
  2. Different cable, same device — fault disappears?
  3. Same cable, shorter length or lower resolution — does it pass?
  4. Same cable at the rated bandwidth — does a known-good cable fail too?

If the fault follows the cable, it is the cable; if it stays with the port, it is the device. Write down the model, length and tested resolution for every case.

Swap one variable at a time — if the fault follows the cable it is the cable; if it stays with the port, it is the device.
