What Is an MFi License?

Apple's MFi ("Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad") certification licenses authorized accessory makers to use Apple's logo. With a pass rate of only about 2%, it signals quality, compatibility and adherence to Apple's strict supplier code of conduct.

Apple MFi certification (short for “Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad”) is Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) license allowing its authorized accessory manufacturers to use Apple's logo on external accessories they produce.

Certification Details

Certified products on the market clearly display the Apple MFi logo. Apple allows authorized manufacturers to print the authorized label on product packaging. The unified logo designed by Apple has very strict and demanding usage rules, and the certification pass rate is only about 2%. To maintain product life cycle and brand image, Apple requires that the quality and finish of licensed accessories be consistent with its own. Licensed products also pass multiple rounds of testing before certification, so regardless of design, an MFi-certified Apple accessory offers consumers a more credible quality guarantee than uncertified accessories. Successfully obtaining MFi authorization has become a symbol of the technology and quality strength of Apple accessory manufacturers and design enterprises.

Apple has specific and mandatory requirements for all authorized distributors: Apple's functional accessory products must be sold with certified, authorized brand accessories. Otherwise, Apple will not provide any warranty for damage to Apple products caused by the use of unauthorized accessories.

Security of Authentication

Anyone familiar with Apple devices knows that non-certified Apple accessories trigger warnings when connected, and may even switch the device directly to airplane mode—indicating that uncertified accessories cannot work properly with Apple products and will affect normal use. If, when used, no prompts appear and there is a seamless connection with normal song playback, normal data transmission and data synchronization, the product is certified.

Code of Conduct for Certification

Apple is committed to ensuring that its supply chain factories provide safe working conditions, treat workers with respect, and are environmentally responsible in their manufacturing processes. Apple's suppliers must comply with the laws, regulations and decrees of the countries in which they operate in all their business activities. Based on internationally accepted standards, Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct provides more specific provisions to enhance corporate social and environmental responsibility and requires suppliers to implement this standard through Apple's management system. The Code borrows from and includes parts of the Electronic Industry Code of Conduct (EICC) and references recognized standards such as those of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Social Accountability International (SAI) and the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI).
